Cytokine profile and immunomodulation in asymptomatic human T-lymphotropic virus type 1-infected blood donors

Increased risk of tuberculosis with human T-lymphotropic virus-1 infection

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate whether infection with human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) increases tuberculosis. The results suggested that infection of HTLV-1 was significantly associated with 1st diagnosis of tuberculosis, which would have implications for public health in areas where the prevalence of HTLV-1 is high, and HTLV-1 infected individuals be monitored for symptoms of tuberculosis, allowing for an early diagnosis and treatment.
