Day-care for women with high-risk pregnancies

Article Abstract:

A survey of out-patient care for women with high-risk pregnancies has revealed four main benefits of such care: reassurance, monitoring, avoidance of admission, and quality of care. The women also thought that day care was more relaxing than attending a clinic, their partners could easily be involved, and the unit was more accessible. Disadvantages included time spent at the unit, child-care problems, travel difficulties, and anxiety that problems will be experienced when not at the clinic.

The professional management of hospital multi-disciplinary teams is essential when operating on day care surgery patients. Patients are screened to assess their suitability for day care surgery, ensuring follow up appointments are made before discharge. Nursing staff need to talk patients through any fears they may have concerning day surgery, ensuring all patients have adequate back up care should they require it.

Issues concerning the management of day-case tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for children are discussed. This approach can be successful in carefully chosen cases, as long as there is full parental participation in postoperative care.
