Decreased susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae to fluoroquinolones in Canada

Article Abstract:

Resistance to the fluoroquinolone antibiotics is increasing in Canada. Researchers tested the susceptibility of strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae to these antibiotics between 1993 and 1998. The percentage of strains that were becoming resistant to the drugs increased from zero in 1993 to 1.7% in 1998. Resistance was more common in elderly patients and those living in Ontario. The use of fluoroquinolones was also greatest in the elderly and Ontario residents. The number of prescriptions for flouroquinolones increased 7-fold between 1988 and 1997.

Outpatient gatifloxacin therapy and dysglycemia in older adults

Article Abstract:

Two population-based, nested case-control studies were conducted among case patients treated in the hospital for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. The experiment revealed that as compared with the use of other broad-spectrum oral antibiotics, including other fluoroquinolones, the use of gatifloxacin among outpatients is associated with an increased risk of in-hospital treatment for both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.

SARS -- one year later

Article Abstract:

The experience with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) confirms the fact that a strong international public health infrastructure is necessary to quickly respond to infectious disease outbreaks. There have been no cases since July, but officials expect SARS to reappear in the winter of 2003-2004. SARS does not appear to be extremely infectious, since many cases occurred in a health care setting.
