Defending professional independence: ACCME's proposed new guidelines for commercial support of CME

Article Abstract:

Medical educators should not allow the pharmaceutical industry or any medical education and communication company to determine the topics covered in continuing medical education (CME) classes or choose the speakers. Some doctors worry that the loss of industry support would devastate CME programs. However, many CME programs are too lavish and expensive anyway. And the industry can certainly create its own programs but these should be seen as marketing seminars rather than CME.

Separating Continuing Medical Education From Pharmaceutical Marketing

Article Abstract:

The pharmaceutical industry may have too much influence over continuing medical education courses. In many cases, a pharmaceutical company may help organize and advertise the event, choose and pay the speakers, subsidize the cost of attending for doctors and medical students, and provide free meals. In return, salespeople are often present to market the company's products.
