Experts debate widening use of opioid drugs for chronic nonmalignant pain

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine whether opioid drugs can be effective for all types of chronic pain, not just cancer pain. Doctors have been reluctant to prescribe opioids for chronic pain for fear that patients will become addicted. However, studies have shown that patients are no more likely to become addicted than other people.

Accelerated approval scutinized: confirmatory phase 4 studies on new drugs languish

Article Abstract:

The pros and cons of the FDA's accelerated drug approval process are described. This is a fast-track process for drugs used to treat life-threatening diseases such as cancer. Some scientists cite the approval of the cancer drug Iressa in May, 2003 as evidence that the fast-track process is not working properly.

FDA sounds alert on anemia drugs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued a warning at the health risks involved in high doses of Erthropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). FDA have advised that lowest dose of ESAs should be prescribed by physicians.
