Defending the epithelium

Article Abstract:

Two studies examine the microbe-fighting peptides that keep infection at bay in the urinary tract and the colon. In the urinary tract, such peptides are deployed with the lightning speed, and in the colon a short-chain fatty acid induces the peptides and fends off dysentery caused by Shigella species.

Pigment epithelium-derived factor regulates the vasculature and mass of the prostate and pancreas

Article Abstract:

The angiogenesis inhibitor pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is identified as a key inhibitor of stromal vasculature and epithelial tissue growth in mouse prostate and pancreas. How PEDF regulates normal pancreas and prostate mass is shown.

Leukocytes mediate retinal vascular remodeling during development and vaso-obliteration in disease

Article Abstract:

A vision threatening pathological neovascularization is caused due to retinal ischemia. The leukocytes that prune the retinal vasculature during normal development and obliterate it in disease is shown.
