Deprivation: bringing care to all

Article Abstract:

The provision of maternity services to deprived parts of the community is an important health issue in the UK. The debate over the admission of health care assistants to the Royal College of Midwives, the overhaul of maternity care payments to general practitioners and the issue of women's right to chose their own maternity package are other vital topics. An interview with Margaret Brain, president of the Royal College of Midwives, is also included.

Antenatal screening and counselling: the midwife's role

Article Abstract:

Midwives need to have a thorough understanding of antenatal screening and counselling which is on offer to pregnant women in the UK. There are seven main antenatal screening tests, all of which are designed to identify any foetal abnormalities. Tests vary depending on which health authority the woman is registered under. Down's syndrome and neural tube defeats are the main abnormalities which can be detected with screening techniques.

Midwifery: Fetal monitoring

Article Abstract:

More and more pieces of equipment are becoming available for fetal heart monitoring. Although midwives would like to use intermittent auscultation for low-risk pregnancies, most pregnant women are monitored continuously. This may be because midwives have not been trained or lack confidence in interpreting cardiotocographs.
