Article Abstract:

Valaciclovir and famciclovir do not appear to be more effective than acyclovir in treating varicella zoster and herpes simplex infections. They have similar prices and side effects as acyclovir. Fungal infection of the nails is a difficult infection to treat. Most topical drugs do not work well and relapse rates are high. Three antifungal drugs taken orally appear to work better because the drug concentrates in the nail. Itraconazole, terbinafine and fluconazole are all effective, leading to cure in 70% to 80% of patients with low relapse rates. However, they may interact with other drugs. Terbinafine appears to be the most cost-effective drug.
