Design, implementation, and evaluation at entry of a prospective cohort study of homosexual and bisexual HIV-1-negative men in Belo Horizonte, Brazil: Project Horizonte

Article Abstract:

Initial results from Project Horizonte, Brazil, show that it is possible to recruit gay and bisexual men for a long-term study of HIV infection. Of the 470 men enrolled, only 139 were lost to follow-up over a three-year period. Eighteen became HIV-positive during the study.

HIV-1 subtyping in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil: a city with African sociodemographic characteristics

Article Abstract:

In Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, most people infected with HIV are infected with suptype B. In a study of 134 HIV patients, this was true of those infected via sexual intercourse and those infected via intravenous drug abuse.

HIV-1 diversity in Brazil: genetic, biologic, and immunologic characterization of HIV-1 strains in three potential HIV vaccine evaluation sites

Article Abstract:

Brazilian researchers report three HIV-1 subtypes in Brazil. Tests conducted on 35 blood samples collected from three HIV vaccine sites showed that 83% were subtype B, 14% were subtype F, and 3% were subtype C.
