Physician recommendations and patient autonomy: finding a balance between physician power and patient choice

Article Abstract:

Health and treatment decisions may best be made within the context of a balanced and caring physician-patient relationship where the physician's expertise is shared and the patient's choices are respected. This type of shared dialogue should result in better informed decisions by the patient. Several factors present in the current medical climate may override this process including limited medical resources, the patient's ability to make mentally competent choices, and the doctor's ethical responsibility to recommend beneficial treatment.

Responding to Intractable Terminal Suffering: The Role of Terminal Sedation and Voluntary Refusal of Food and Fluids

Article Abstract:

Researchers discuss terminal sedation and voluntary refusal of food and water as a possible choice for terminally ill patients who do not want to go on living. These two options used together can be a viable alternative to physician-assisted suicide even in areas where it is legal. Potential guidelines are provided and the moral and legal aspects of the option is discussed.
