Designing a research study

Article Abstract:

Nurses may decide to undertake a research study if they find there is no existing research indicating the clinical effectiveness of a particular intervention. The nurse should consult an appropriate individual in their organization for advice on whether the proposed research topic is reasonable, whether it fits the aims of the organization and whether support will be available. The research will involve the collection, analysis and interpretation of data, and the presentation of findings together with a proposed methodology for implementation in clinical practice.

Critically appraising literature

Article Abstract:

Nurses who have conducted a literature search as part of an investigation of clinical effectiveness will need to critically appraise any research reports they have found. This process will involve the use of appraisal questions to reveal the validity of the structure and methodology of the research. Nurses should carefully examine the research outcomes to ensure that conclusions are valid and applicable to their circumstances. Similar appraisal techniques are also applicable to systematic reviews. Definitions of terms used in the appraisal process are included.

Searching the literature

Article Abstract:

Nurses who are assessing the clinical effectiveness of an intervention will need to make a systematic literature search. This process will involve carefully defining search terms, then consulting a range of indexes including 'Index Medicus', the UK 'National Research Register' and the 'British Nursing Index.' The search may reveal research reports, evidence from controlled trials or observational analysis. The nurse must analyze this information before deciding whether to implement a plan for change in their local environment.
