Detection of fetal messenger ribonucleic acid in maternal blood to determine fetal RdD status as a strategy for noninvasive prenatal diagnosis

Article Abstract:

Using reverse transcriptase and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect fetal RNA in maternal blood samples may be helpful in identifying RhD-positive fetuses. Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme that converts RNA into DNA. Fetal messenger RNA is much more abundant in maternal blood samples than fetal DNA. Researchers used this technique to detect RhD-positive fetuses in 35 RhD-negative pregnant women. This technique identified more RhD-positive fetuses than traditional PCR tests for fetal DNA in maternal blood. Normally, amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling is used for prenatal diagnosis, but they can harm the fetus.

Randomized controlled trial of misoprostol for second-trimester pregnancy termination associated with fetal malformation

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness, women's views of the termination procedure, and success of umbilical cord culture for vaginal and oral misoprostol versus the intra-amniotic prostaglandin PGF(sub 2alpha) for second-trimester pregnancy (STPT) are compared in a randomized controlled trial. It was seen that oral misoprostal was less effective than intra-amniotic PGF(sub 2alpha) or vaginal misoprostol for STPT.

Noninvasive tests to predict fetal anemia: a study comparing Doppler and ultrasound parameters

Article Abstract:

Doppler ultrasound measurement of the flow of blood in the middle cerebral artery of a fetus is a more accurate way of detecting fetal anemia than other noninvasive measurements, according to a study of 16 pregnancies. Intrahepatic umbilical venous maximum velocity, liver length, and spleen perimeter were all less accurate. Fetal anemia can be caused by red blood cell incompatibility.
