Determinants of the nutritional status of vitamin E in a non-smoking Mediterranean population. Analysis of the effect of vitamin E intake, alcohol consumption and body mass index on the serum alpha-tocopherol concentration

Article Abstract:

Some 143 men and women were observed to examine the association between vitamin E intake and other factors with plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration in non-smoking Mediterranean people. Results showed that each one mg increase in vitamin E intake resulted in an increase of serum alpha-tocopherol concentration at an average of 0.66 micromo1/L, following adjustments for age, gender, Body Mass Index (BMI), alcohol consumption and energy intake. This suggests that the nutritional status of vitamin E is associated with vitamin E intake and BMI among non-smokers.
