Developing the nursing role in major trauma

Article Abstract:

The military trauma nurse coordinator (TNC) is responsible for managing the Major Trauma Clinical Effectiveness Project, which was set up in Oct 1997 and evaluates the clinical management of seriously injured patients entering Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley, England. The TNC's role in split into education, clinical and audit. Particular emphasis is placed on the production of high quality documentation.

Monitoring a patient's temperature, pulse and respiratory rate is essential if a nurse is to quickly notice any decline in the patient's health. However, respiratory rate is often omitted from patients' charts. It is vital that all staff involved in supplying patient care are made aware of the importance of noting respiratory rate.

Introducing a medical emergency team

There are many challenges associated with establishing a medical emergency team in a district hospital. When setting up such a team, it may be better initially to restrict the introduction to only one directorate or ward area. A steering group should be set up at an early stage.
