Foreign nurses look set to stay

Article Abstract:

Nurses recruited internationally for the UK National Health Service (NHS) have proven successful in improving nursing, yet many foreign nurses are exploited. Initially hired for two years, a new pay system and improved treatment will help these nurses remain a significant resource for the NHS.

Nursing expects backing from new health team

Nurses must maintain strong political contact with the new head of the British Department of Health, John Reid. The Health Department should continue the reform of the National Health Service begun by Reid's predecessor Alan Milburn.

Issues are presented concerning the possibility that National Health Service patients from the United Kingdom will be treated in hospitals in Germany where there are spare beds and no shortage of nursing staff.
