Development and assessment of an innovative culturally sensitive educational videotape to improve adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy in Soweto, South Africa

Article Abstract:

A culturally sensitive audiovisual patient education program that would be of substantial and measurable benefit in increasing patient understanding of the concept of antiretroviral (ARV) resistance risk and medication-taking skills is hypothesized. The findings indicate that a culturally sensitive educational videotape could improve medication-taking knowledge in South Africa and that further study of the potential efficacy of using media technology to improve individuals' adherence to ARV therapy is warranted.

Survival of HIV-1 in syringes

Article Abstract:

HIV can survive in hypodermic syringes for several weeks. Researchers loaded HIV-infected blood into syringes and then expelled the blood, leaving a small amount of blood in the syringe. Then they tested the blood immediately or stored the syringe for over a month at room temperature. They were able to recover virus from the syringes even after one month. In fact, viral levels seemed to be higher the longer the syringe was stored. This supports the need for needle exchange programs.

HIV prevalence, sociodemographic, and behavioral correlates and recruitment methods among injection drug users in St. Petersburg, Russia

Article Abstract:

The combination of political, economic, and social changes that accompanied the fall of the Soviet Union has resulted in a dramatic epidemic of drug abuse in Russia, which has led to an epidemic of HIV-1, driven by injection drug use. The estimated HIV prevalence of 30% places St. Petersburg among the worst injection drug users concentrated epidemics in Europe.
