The economic burden of HIV in the United States in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

An incidence-based cost-of-illness analysis was conducted to estimate the lifetime cost of HIV/AIDS resulting from new infections diagnosed in 2002. Productivity losses far surpass direct medical costs and are disproportionately borne by minority races/ethnicities and analysis underscores economic benefits of more effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens and universal access to ART.

Increased incidence of disseminated histoplasmosis following highly active antiretroviral therapy initiation

Article Abstract:

An investigation on whether the initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has any influence on the incidence of disseminated histoplasmosis is presented. Results reveal that after controlling for the confounding effect of CD4 counts, the incidence of symptomatic disseminated histoplasmosis in the 2 months after HAART initiation is higher than in untreated patients.

Increased risk of intrauterine transmission of HIV-1 associated with granulocyte elastase in endocervical mucus

Article Abstract:

The factors that can affect intrauterine HIV transmission and the way they can be identified and addressed during pregnancy are presented. It is suggested that the women showing positive granulocyte elastase at delivery be strongly suspected of having and if having had chorioamnionitis during pregnancy, which could affect the intrauterine transmission of HIV.
