Developmental programming of the hypothalamus: A matter of fat

Article Abstract:

The newly discovered connection between leptin and hypothalamus shows that the hormone is an important signal for the development of hypothalamic circuits, as the development of brain circuits are generally known to be influenced by the hormones. The results presents the possibility of existence of a crucial window during which a subject's basal metabolic phenotype can be altered, as it is found that leptin is dispensable for acute metabolic regulation in adults.

Staying slim on a low-GABA diet

Article Abstract:

A study demonstrates how the versatile neurotransmitter GABA acquires a new role in the control of appetite by the hypothalamus. Results show that through its regulation of GABA(sub A) receptor trafficking, the little-known Huntingtin-associated protein (Hap 1) might have a regulatory role in food intake and control of body weight.

Did a muscle fuel gauge conquer the brain?

Article Abstract:

AMP-activated protein kinase has a crucial role in coupling substrate availability with substrate oxidation in skeletal muscle. Findings suggest that the biochemical fuel sensor also participates in the hypothalmic recognition of the body's energy status.
