Diabetes childhood incidence

Article Abstract:

There are an estimated 14 in 100,000 people under the age of 15 developing insulin dependent diabetes (IDDM) each year, with a rise in the disease in younger children under five, according to the British Diabetic Association. IDDM requires constant monitoring and control of blood glucose levels to avoid complications such as hyperglycaemia. Children can often be treated as out-patients due to earlier diagnosis, and parents need to understand dietary requirements and become proficient in giving insulin injections and the use of monitoring meters.

A healthy balance

Article Abstract:

A survey by health educator, April Brett has revealed a preponderance of commercially-prepared health and nutrition information leaflets. Information may mislead by omission or present a biased viewpoint. The situation creates a dilemma for professionals who need to give clients written information. Professional oranisations may endorse commercial material to save money. However, the UK Health Education Authority checks for misleading information. Nurses should also check leaflets for inaccuracy or partiality.

What's your poison?

Article Abstract:

The Society for the Promotion of Nutritional Therapy maintains there is a link between nutrition and health. Body malfunction such as migraine or arthritis may result from dietary allergies. The Royal College of Nursing has indicated increased interest in this complimentary therapy. However, the Royal College of Physicians has rejected the theory due to lack of evidence.
