Abdominal sacral colpoperineopexy: a new approach for correction of posterior compartment defects and perineal descent associated with vaginal vault prolapse

Article Abstract:

Surgical suspension of both the vagina and perineum may effectively treat patients with vaginal prolapse and associated bowel symptoms. Vaginal prolapse is the protrusion of pelvic organs or tissues into the vagina. Protrusion of the rectum or intestines, or excessive movement of the perineum, may impair normal defecation. Researchers performed abdominal sacral colpoperineopexy in 19 women, anchoring the vagina and perineum internally to prevent prolapse. Bowel symptoms improved in 8 of 11 women, and all had reduced or absent prolapse after surgery.

An anatomic and functional assessment of the discrete defect rectocele repair

Article Abstract:

A surgical technique called the discrete fascial defect rectocele repair appears to be effective in women with rectocele. A rectocele occurs when the rectum begins to protrude through the wall of the vagina. Surgeons performed the discrete fascial defect repair on 69 women with a rectocele. All but two women experienced alleviation of their symptoms, which included fecal incontinence and constipation. Rectoceles recurred in 18% within a year of surgery.
