Diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer disease and related disorders: consensus statement of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, the Alzheimer's Association, and the American Geriatrics Society

Article Abstract:

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is probably underdiagnosed because physicians do not recognize early warning signs and family members don't report them. AD is the most common form of dementia and is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function. It can be diagnosed by a general medical and psychiatric assessment. The only drugs approved to enhance cognition are the cholinesterase inhibitors tacrine and donepezil. NSAIDS, estrogen and Ginkgo biloba are being evaluated. Antidepressants may also be needed and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine are effective with few side effects.
