Dial N for nurse

Article Abstract:

Nurses can safely deliver medical advice over the telephone, according to a report published in the British Medical Journal. A study was carried out by researchers at the University of Southampton into the quality of service offered by telephone advice lines. Patients at a Wiltshire-based GP practice made up to 40% less visits to the surgery by using the nurse-led telephone help line. The UK government is assessing the concept of establishing a national nurse telephone system which could be accessed using one telephone number.

Health minister for Scotland Sam Galbraith had a successful career as a neurosurgery consultant at the Greater Glasgow Health Board before going into politics. He has no plans to axe the private finance initiative and believes that nurses could do more to place themselves on the same level as doctors.
