Dialogue first step to answers on reform

Article Abstract:

The American public has demonstrated a commitment to health reform but remains uncertain about what course reform should take. Given the large number of current proposals, it is likely that some compromise is in the offing. Health Access America, a plan offered by the American Medical Association, exemplifies this spirit of compromise. The plan would guarantee Medicaid coverage for all those below the poverty line while instituting a trust fund to make the program more financially secure. It would also reduce funds allocated to cover wasteful malpractice suits.

Certificate-of-need bill prompts flurry of activity in Va

Article Abstract:

Pending Virginia legislation would require health care providers to attain state approval for major equipment purchases; however, those who register plans early would be exempt from this 'certificate-of-need' requirement. Consequently, doctors, hospitals and other health facilities are rushing to register their capital spending plans with the state Health Department. In Feb 1992, the department received more than double the number of registrations than they had in the previous 2 and 1/2 years.

Policy prescription for HIV

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association supports the HIV Prevention Act of 1997, a bill introduced by Rep. Tom Coburn that requires confidential reporting of HIV infection to the Centers for Disease Control and state health officials, as well as contact tracing and notification. The bill tackles the issues from a rational public health perspective by stressing prevention and early detection. The bill contains other sensible provisions and asserts the need for strict confidentiality.
