Diastolic abnormalities in systemic sclerosis: evidence for associated defective cardiac functional reserve

Article Abstract:

Many patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) may have a heart condition that affects the relaxation and filling phase of the heart beat cycle, which is called the diastolic phase. Ten of 24 patients with SSc evaluated with echocardiography had evidence of impaired diastolic function. During exercise, eight of these 10 patients also had a below normal percentage of blood ejected during the strongest beat of the heart beat cycle. Only two of the remaining 14 patients had low ejection fractions.

Right ventricular diastolic abnormalities in systemic sclerosis: relation to left ventricular involvement and pulmonary hypertension

Article Abstract:

Many patients with systemic sclerosis have abnormal function in the right ventricle of the heart, according to a study of 77 patients, 40% of whom had right ventricular dysfunction. Systemic sclerosis is a connective tissue disease that affects many organs, including the heart.

Diastolic function abnormalities in rheumatoid arthritis: evaluation by echo Doppler transmitral flow and pulmonary venous flow

Article Abstract:

Many rheumatoid arthritis patients may have abnormal heart function, according to a study of 32 RA patients with no history of heart disease. The function most affected was diastole, which is when the heart has finished contracting and is filling with blood.
