Dietary trends: estimates from food supply and survey data

Article Abstract:

The national food supply data and simple food frequency questions were evaluated as to their accuracy in estimating dietary trends in a certain population based on 1980s and 1990s data collected from different sources in Australia. The results of the evaluation confirmed that although the two methods have their own limitations, they still gave comparable estimates of dietary changes, indicating that the use of questionnaires and population survey data are both useful for monitoring progress and fulfilling national dietary goals.

Contaminants and nutrients in total diets in Spain

Article Abstract:

A study conducted on the dietary intake of metals such as lead, cadmium, copper, iron, zinc and mercury in different regions of Spain indicates that the intake of lead by people in Madrid is high and poses a risk to health, especially in children and in pregnant and lactating women. The levels of cadmium and zinc are close to the acceptable daily intake values in some areas, but in places where the diet includes sea foods, the levels are of cadmium and mercury are higher than the provisional tolerable weekly intake values.

Evaluation of a food frequency questionnaire used to assess nutrient intake in pregnant women

Article Abstract:

A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which is useful for ranking individuals within the distribution, reliably estimates nutrient intakes in pregnant women. The absolute values of FFQ are higher than those from food diaries maintained by pregnant women but the energy intakes compare well with their predicted energy requirements. The percentage of women classified to the correct quarter of intake is similar in FFQ and food diary using serum vitamin C as a biomarker of intake.
