Serum levels of free 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in vitamin D toxicity

Article Abstract:

Elevated levels of free 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D may lead to development of high levels of calcium in the blood in patients with vitamin D toxicity. A case study of 11 persons from one household who experienced hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood) from vitamin D toxicity and a laboratory study of vitamin D metabolites found that increasing the concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) caused a 78% increase of free 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25-(OH)2D). Patients with vitamin D toxicity had elevated free 1,25-(OH)2D levels even though total 1,25-(OH)2D levels were normal or slightly elevated. Patients had high levels of 25-OHD.

Update in endocrinology

Article Abstract:

Highlights of research in endocrinology in 1996 are described. The drug troglitazone reduced insulin resistance in patients with non-insulin-dependent, or type 2, diabetes. The drug atorvastatin lowered triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with elevated blood lipid levels. AIDS patients gained weight when given growth hormone. The drug alendronate was more effective than etidronate in Paget's disease of the bone and also reduced the rate of bone fractures in postmenopausal women. Estrogen also increased bone density and did not lead to weight gain.
