Dirty little secrets

Article Abstract:

A public enquiry into allegations concerning Ashworth Hospital, England will create debate about the management of special hospitals for psychiatric criminals. The enquiry will examine allegations including pornography, sexual abuse and corruption, and will consider all aspects of the seemingly liberal management regime at the hospital. The fact that Ashworth underwent another public enquiry less than 10 years ago, and was then found to have too cruel and restrictive regime, indicates that the management of special hospitals has fundamental problems which may require complete re-examination.

Five years' hard Labour

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service (NHS) will have changed considerably by the time Labour has another opportunity to win a general election in 1996 or 1997, and it will not be possible to do a U-turn. Prior to the last general election Labour had been well-prepared with health policies, but it will have to formulate new policies for the future. It would be impossible to abolish NHS trusts when hundreds have been introduced. Labour's negative attitude to the changes in the NHS could lose it votes if the changes prove successful. A new shadow health secretary is expected to be appointed.

Capital punishment

Article Abstract:

The Tomlinson inqiry recommendation of hospital closures in London, England may be relevant to other large British cities. The labour Party supports primary health care and considers reorganisation should extend beyond London. However Health Secretary Virginia Bottomley regards London as a special case and has no plans for national rationalisation. Unions are largely in favour of keeping hospitals open although representatives have accepted that London's hospitals are financially unviable.
