Disentangling caring from love in a nurse-patient relationship

Article Abstract:

The possibility of young female psychiatric patients developing feelings of love and attachment for their male nurses is high. Patients may misinterpret the caring and close contact of the nurse, and then feel misled when they realise the truth. Nurses may feel guilty and unsupported by colleagues when these misunderstandings occur. The issue should be taken more seriously than is often the case in the nursing profession, as it is related to a major focus in nursing, which is the therapeutic value of the nurse.

All patients' views are important

Article Abstract:

A nurse consultant argues that putting patients as service users on boards on hospitals will not improve medical communication with all patients. Patients who agree to serve on boards are usually outspoken, well-off and educated. The British government needs to find ways to increase medical communication between hospital personnel and patients who are quiet or underpriveleged.
