NOS knockouts and neuroprotection

Article Abstract:

Different isoforms of nitric oxide synthase may be involved in the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Huntington's disease. Nitric oxide is a free radical and can produce oxidative damage in the brain.

Heme moves to center stage in cerebral malaria

Article Abstract:

A new therapeutic approach to treat cerebral malaria suggests that the enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (OH-1) or its product carbon monoxide could decrease free heme level that induce inflammation and permeabilization of the blood brain barrier, leading to death.
