Article Abstract:

Health care providers should develop a managed care strategy before contracting with managed care organizations to avoid signing on with health plans that are incompatible with their own practices. Some physicians are so worried about being left out of the managed care system, that they sign contracts for which they are unprepared. Providers must understand the basic concepts of managed care and be prepared to consider their practice as a business before a managed care strategy can be established. Also, providers must thoroughly understand their own practices, which can be accomplished through a practice assessment.

Article Abstract:

Disease management is a trend that is sweeping the health care industry in an era of cost containment. The idea is to consider clinical information and financial cost in prescribing treatments that have maximum effectiveness and minimal expense. Because standard treatments are unlikely to work for all patients, great emphasis is placed on illness prevention and early detection. Physicians should take the lead in developing clinical and financial guidelines for treatments.
