Doctors, HMOs give peace a chance: Colorado providers negotiate pact on physician contract protections

Article Abstract:

The Colorado Medical Society (CMS) signed an agreement in Jan 1995 with 80% of the state's health maintenance organizations (HMO) that forces managed care organizations to inform physicians why they were not selected to join their physician networks. The agreement requires disclosure of selection criteria, mandates the development of voluntary dispute-resolution procedures and allows for due process if a physician is asked to leave. In return, the HMOs receive a pledge by the CMS that it will not seek or endorse 'any-willing-provider' legislation in Colorado. The agreement is valid for one year and takes effect in Jun 1995.

Patients demand answers from health leaders at televised forum

Article Abstract:

Inadequacies in the nation's healthcare system were spotlighted in a 2 hour special 'Nightline' broadcast. The show provided an opportunity for health care officials to answer concerns of individuals who faced problems with their own health care insurance. The debate was an opportunity for consumers to air their own horror stories on health care coverage. Health care officials were often mired in the complexities of medical care reform in trying to tell an angry audience why so many individuals lack adequate care in the United States.

Survey: many Maine doctors back single-payer system

Article Abstract:

A single-payer national healthcare system was favored by 57% of Maine doctors who responded to a Physicians for a National Health Program survey. Many of the respondents agreed that the state's multipayer system and access to medical care were inadequate to meet medical care demand. The survey also revealed that 41% of respondents believe that the federal government should run the healthcare system. However, the Maine Medical Assn does not believe that the state's physicians want a single-payer system.
