Don't rush to judgement on work force ratios

Article Abstract:

The Council on Graduate Medical Education's proposal to equally split medical positions between specialists and generalists is unwarranted. Studies to determine whether care provided by specialists is more costly than that provided by generalists have proved inconclusive. However, studies show that the quality of care dispensed by specialists is often superior to that dispensed by generalists. The benefits in the quality of care provided by specialist physicians outweighs their purportedly higher cost compared to general practitioners.

Follow-up reinforces performance appraisal findings

Article Abstract:

A case study is presented in which a physician's self-evaluation differs substantially from the physician-evaluator's. The evaluator concludes that added work is causing the physician to perform some tasks poorly. The evaluator orders the physician to re-evaluate his priorities, increase his assertiveness through a class at a local junior college, and improve his organizational skills. In addition, the evaluator gives the physician a written list of goals and a timeline for completing them.

Before selecting physicians, sample their work

Article Abstract:

The principles of structure used in hiring medical practice employees also apply to physician recruitment. Tests, structured interviews, and work samples are particularly effective ways to assess physician performance under disparate conditions. Physician ability to manage change, communicate effectively and negotiate is often indicative of the quality of overall performance.
