Drawing on experience to help cancer patients cope

Article Abstract:

Wendy S. Harpham, MD, was forced to close her medical practice in Jul 1991 after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Since then, she has written a primer for newly diagnosed cancer patients entitled, 'Diagnosis Cancer: Your Guide Through the First Few Months,' published by WW Norton and Co. She suggests that physicians hook up patients with support and education networks and help them get involved with their own treatment. She also believes that physicians should monitor a patient's home life, because cancer affects the whole family. Harpham is working on a book for the children of parents with cancer.

Drawing on the truths of internship for medical fiction

Article Abstract:

Roger C. Dunham's first novel, 'Final Diagnosis,' draws on his experiences as an intern at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. Dunham worked in the jail ward, and he recalled his fears that violence would be directed at him. His intern experience was intense and filled with daily crises, and he used these memories to helped shape his novel, which involve young physicians who become cognizant of illegal activities in a hospital jail ward.

Etheridge, an anesthesiologist in Norfolk, VA, persuaded the Norfolk Academy of Medicine to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity program and has organized volunteers and raised money for the project.
