Early lifesavers: Is it time that nurses considered taking on defibrillation as one of their core responsibilities

Article Abstract:

Cardiac arrest requires prompt emergency action and key elements to a patients' chances of survival are early access to professional help, basic life support, defibrillation and advanced life support. Survival rates fall quickly at about 10% for each minute following cessation of circulation. Defibrillation is not see a key nursing competency in the UK, but guidelines recommend that defibrillation should be a key competency. Nurses and employers have been reluctant to view defibrillation as a key component of nursing practice, possibly due to concern about required skills, but automated external defibrillators are small, light and easy to use.

Man seeks nurses ...

Article Abstract:

The Isle of Man, UK, opted to get experienced nurses from the mainland rather than continue with a nurse training programme after new nurse training methods were introduced nationally in 1992. The island is now suffering a severe nursing shortage, and the government is considering measures to build up the profession, including the offer of cash incentives for mainland nurses and the re-introduction of a nurse training programme. Local nursing and trade union representatives believe that a training programme would have a positive effect on nursing throughout the island.
