Effect of Excessive Weight Gain With Intensive Therapy of Type 1 Diabetes on Lipid Levels and Blood Pressure

Article Abstract:

Intensive insulin treatment may cause weight gain in some diabetic patients, which may increase their risk of heart disease. Intensive insulin treatment usually involves more than two injections per day. Researchers measure blood lipid and cholesterol levels in 1,168 diabetic patients enrolled in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, about half of whom received intensive treatment. Patients who gained the most weight under the intensive treatment had the highest levels of cholesterol and triglycerides and also the highest blood pressure and body mass, even compared to the patients on standard treatment.
