Effect of caloreen supplementation on some haematological values and urinary iron excretion during protein-energy malnutrition

Article Abstract:

The effect of caloreen supplementation in children with moderate protein energy malnutrition (PEM) was determined by feeding them caloreen or starch for 14 days. Blood samples were taken after the study to assess iron status using packed cell volume, hemoglobin, total iron binding capacity and serum ferritin as well as urinary iron levels. Results show that caloreen supplementation to PEM children improves body iron levels and its application to the regular diet may retard and ameliorate anemia in children.
