The effect of the ingestion of ethanol on obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Article Abstract:

People with a heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy should not drink alcohol. Researchers gave an echocardiogram to 36 people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy before and after they drank 40% ethanol or a placebo. The placebo had no effect on blood pressure but ethanol reduced blood pressure and increased the pressure in the left ventricle. This would reduce the amount of blood pumped by the heart which could be potentially dangerous in these patients. This occurred despite the fact that most of the patients were taking medication to improve blood flow from the heart.

Acute necrotizing pancreatitis

Article Abstract:

Acute necrotizing pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas that causes parts of the pancreas to die. Drug and alcohol abuse can cause this condition, as well as other medical problems. It can be diagnosed by CT scans of the abdomen. If an infection is not present, the risk of death is usually low. Nutritional support is usually given in these cases to rest the pancreas. Surgeons can remove the dead tissue and non-surgical drainage can also be used. Antibiotics can prevent the spread of bacteria from the colon to the pancreas.
