Enhanced growth and improved vascular function in offspring from successive pregnancies in endothelial nitric oxide synthase knockout mice

Article Abstract:

The role of parity in modulation of fetal programming of growth and vascular responses in transgenic mice was evaluated. Studies reveal that successive pregnancies can lead to maternal uterine adaptations that bypass the lack of a functional nitric oxide synthase and lead to improvement in post natal growth.

Effect of chronic treatment with 17-beta-estradiol and progesterone on endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent relaxation in isolated aortic rings from ovariectomized rats

Article Abstract:

Sex hormone treatments may not change the relaxation response of the aorta. Researchers obtained rings of aortas from rats that had received sex hormone treatments for 10 days. Sex hormone treatments did not interfere with relaxation of the aorta whether or not the endothelium, or inner lining, of the aorta was present. Sex hormone treatments tended to override inhibition of the relaxation response caused by nitro-L-arginine methyl ester. Treatment with sex hormones did not affect release of relaxing factor by the endothelium, nor did it desensitize aorta muscle to nitric oxide.
