Effect of cigar smoking on the risk of cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer in men

Article Abstract:

Cigar smoking can increase the risk of lung and heart disease as well as cancer of the upper digestive tract. This was the conclusion of a study that followed cigar smokers and non-smokers for almost 25 years. Compared to non-smokers, cigar smokers had twice the risk of lung cancer and upper digestive tract cancer. They also had a 25% to 50% higher risk of coronary heart disease and chronic obstructive lung disease. Use of cigars and alcohol seemed to increase the risk of these diseases.
