The effect of hysterectomy on the risk of an abnormal screening Papanicolaou test result

Article Abstract:

Many women who have had a hysterectomy may not need regular Pap tests. In a study of 21,152 women 50 years or older who had a Pap test, those who had a hysterectomy were 10 times less likely to have an abnormal test. Women who took estrogen replacement therapy had an even lower risk compared with women who did not use estrogen.

Molecular Papanicolaou tests in the twenty-first century: molecular analyses witih fluid-based Papanicolaou technology

Article Abstract:

It is possible to take cell pellets left over from processing a Pap smear and test them for DNA, RNA, and protein using the polymerase chain reaction. This can be done to detect the presence of papillomavirus, which has been linked to cervical cancer.
