The timing of surgery for severe mitral regurgitation

Article Abstract:

Patients with mitral valve regurgitation who have no symptoms but a worsening of left ventricular function should be evaluated for surgery. A 1996 study found that patients with mitral valve regurgitation had a poor prognosis unless they had surgery. This was true even in those with few symptoms. However, many had ejection fractions below 60%, which is the percentage of total blood in the left ventricle that is pumped out. Other researchers have found that surgical repair of the mitral valve carries an excellent prognosis. Patients with asymptomatic regurgitation but normal ejection fractions should be closely followed.

Relation between preoperative inspiratory lung resistance and the outcome of lung-volume-reduction surgery for emphysema

Article Abstract:

A measurement of lung resistance during inhalation may predict which emphysema patients will benefit from lung-volume-reduction surgery. In some patients with chronic obstructive lung disease, removal of lung tissue can improve breathing by making the lungs more flexible. Researchers compared lung function tests before and after surgery in 29 patients treated by lung volume reduction. Twenty-three patients had some improvement after surgery, and 15 patients had clear decreases in airway obstruction. Low inspiratory lung resistance was most predictive of improvement from surgery.
