Effect of nondigestible oligosaccharides on large-bowel functions, blood lipid concentrations and glucose absorption in absorption in young healthy male subjects

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the effect of nondigestible oligosaccharides on large-bowel functions, glucose absorption and blood lipid concentrations in a sample of 12 health young males. Findings revealed that nondigestible oligosaccharides are partly fermented in the human colon. However, the effects on the sample of healthy young men appeared to be limited. In addition, consumption of nondigestible oligosaccharides did not seem to change blood lipid concentrations and glucose absorption in the male subjects.

A comparison of the effect of 9.5 gram/day resistant starch and lactulose on colon function

Article Abstract:

Astudy was done to determine the effects of supplementing unabsorbed and easily fermented disaccharide lactulose in the diet to the colon functions of humans. Results show that lactulose produced more faeces, softer stool forms and faster colonic transit time as compared to resistant starch (RS). In addition, it was shown that an increase in RS intake to three times its value will not significantly alter the function of the colon.

Estimation of intestinal trehalase activity from a laxative threshold of trehalose and lactulose on healthy female subjects

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the digestibility of different levels of trehalose in the small and large intestines of healthy Japanese people. The utilization of trehalose is discussed.
