Effect of oral iodized oil on thyroid size and thyroid hormone metabolism in children with concurrent selenium and iodine deficiency

Article Abstract:

The efficacy of oral iodized oil in goitrous children with both selenium (Se) and iodine deficiencies in rural areas in the western Cote d'Ivoire was examined. After receiving iodized oil, thyroid volume fell significantly. The severity of SE deficiency predicted the rate of response to iodized oil. Oral iodized oil is an effective method for iodine repletion in Se deficient goitrous children.

Monitoring the adequacy of salt iodization in Switzerland: a national study of school children and pregnant women

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the effect which an increase in salt iodization had on 600 pregnant women and 600 young children in Switzerland. Urinary iodine levels were measured 8- to 16-months after increased iodization.

An evaluation of salt intake and iodine nutrition in a rural and urban area of the Cote d'Ivoire

Article Abstract:

The current goals for the iodized salt programme in the Cote d'Ivoire, designed to provide salt with an iodine level of between 30 ppm and 50 ppm, seem to be appropriate, according to research into the habitual salt consumption of residents of the Cote d'Ivoire. It was established that the habitual salt consumption among study participants was an estimated 6 g/d to 7 g/d for adults, 5 g/d for children aged between seven and 12 and 3 g/d for children aged between two and six. This research revealed very high urinary iodine levels in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
