Comparison of diets of diabetic and non-diabetic elderly men in Finland, the Netherlands and Italy

Article Abstract:

A survey evaluated whether dietary recommendations for subjects with diabetes are being adhered to by elderly men in Finland, the Netherlands and Italy. It was concluded that the diet of diabetic men from Finland, Italy and the Netherlands was similar to the diet of non-diabetic men from the respective countries, than the diet of those diabetic men from the other countries. The proportion of fat, saturated fatty acids and carbohydrates was closest to the recommended levels in the diet of Italian diabetic men.

Associations of serum lipids with metabolic control and diet in young subjects with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in Finland

Article Abstract:

The associations of serum lipids with metabolic control and diet composition of Finnish adolescents and young adults with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus were studied. Using glycosylated hemoglobin as an index of metabolic control, results show that diabetics with better metabolic control had lower total cholesterol and serum triglyceride values and a higher high density lipoprotein cholesterol:total cholesterol ratio as compared to diabetics with poor metabolic control.

Dietary patterns and cognitive function in elderly men in Finland, Italy and the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates the link between cognitive function and dietary patterns in elderly men. Results from the study of 40-59-year-old men from Italy, the Netherlands and Finland, who are enrolled in the Seven Countries Study, are inconclusive but show that a healthy diet may be associated with an enhanced cognitive function. Further research is required to provide a definitive answer.
