Effective blood volume: an effective concept or a modern myth

Article Abstract:

The concept of effective blood volume serves as an alternative while explaining the clinical phenomena of edema in relation to physiological dogma. The renal involvement in balancing the body fluid mechanism is uncertain since the body senses fluid volume level indirectly through derivatives such as transmural pressure. The renal responses are unrelated to changes in actual, measurable blood volume. This suggests that physiological systems cannot measure the effects of the volume on derivatives.

The concept of cellular tone: reflections on the endothelium, fibroblasts, and smooth muscle cells

Article Abstract:

Tone has been largely understood as prolonged or indefinite contraction of a tissue. It is hypothesized that tissue tone comes from cellular tone. This was observed in cultured endothelium, smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts. Capillaries are also postulated to have tone since they are known to dilate in response to cold and are 'paralyzed' in states of shock. However, the factors triggering cellular tone and the precise mechanisms still need to be elucidated.

The myth of community as organism

Article Abstract:

The belief that nature has the properties of a super organism is not supported by ecological evidence. The belief in organismic community was advocated by plant ecologist Frederic Clements. The opposing individualistic view was advocated by H.A. Gleason. The notion of nature as a super organism is more of a metaphor than a scientific fact.
