The poor man's capillary microscope: a novel technique for the assessment of capillary morphology

Article Abstract:

An inexpensive portable device for microscopically examining blood vessels in the fingernail bed called a dermatoscope appears to be quick and reliable. Vessel characteristics of 136 fingers on 18 patients with suspected Raynaud's syndrome were compared using the dermatoscope and a standard microscope. Identical results were obtained with both techniques. It took an average of 4 minutes to examine patients with the dermatoscope compared to 18 minutes with the standard microscope. In addition to time savings, the dermatoscope is cheaper than the standard microscope.

Novel pharmacological strategies for analgesia

Article Abstract:

Recent advances in the understanding of pain pathways have stimulated research in the development of pain medication that selectively targets these pathways. Pathway targets within the central nervous system include tachykinin receptors, nitric oxide synthase, and NMDA. Pathway targets in the rest of the body include B1 receptors, nitric oxide synthase, and cyclo-oxygenase. A compound taken from hot peppers called capsaicin may also prove to be an effective pain medication.

DAP kinase and DAP-3: novel positive mediators of apoptosis

Article Abstract:

The role of proteins called death-associated proteins (DAP) in apoptosis is described. Apoptosis is a type of cell death that is programmed by genes. It usually occurs when cells are no longer needed or have been damaged in some way.
