Subclinical beriberi polyneuropathy in the low income group: an investigation with special tools on possible patients with suspected complaints

Article Abstract:

The prevalence rate of subclinical beriberi polyneuropathy is about five times higher in low income as compared to middle and high income groups. Factors contributing to the low income group's susceptibility to beriberi include thiamine deficient diet, low fat and calorie intake, diet rich in carbohydrates, consumption of food items with antithiamine activity, alcoholism, and high prevalence of infectious diseases. Middle and high income groups consume thiamine-rich food and have healthy dietary patterns, thus reducing their vulnerability to beriberi.

Beriberi cardiomyopathy

Article Abstract:

Three cases of beriberi were presented, one of which showed classical features of Shoshin beriberi while the other two showed non-alcoholic cardiac beriberi. Thiamine tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide improved the cardiac symptoms and polyneuropathy which correlated with neurophysiologic findings and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs). This parallel improvement of polyneuropathy and SSEPs provide another tool for monitoring the progress of treatment of beriberi.

The relationship between arm-span measurement and height with special reference to gender and ethnicity

Article Abstract:

Arm-span measurements in the Afro-Caribbean and Asian males are significantly different from height measurements. However, correlation coefficients show a clear relationship between arm-span and height measurements in all the groups. The results indicate that arm span measurements are inaccurate substitutes for height measurements in certain ethnic groups.
