Effectiveness of short-term and long-term zidovudine prophylaxis on detection of HIV-1 subtype E in human placenta and vertical transmission

Article Abstract:

A first study to compare the effectiveness of short-term and long-term zidovudine (ZDV) prophylaxis with respect to the presence of HIV-1 subtype E in the human placenta was conducted. The study observation showed that longer (at least 60 days) prophylaxis was more effective in reducing HIV expression in the placenta and was associated with reduced vertical transmission to neonates.

Abacavir and mycophenolic acid, an inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase, have profound and synergistic anti-HIV activity

Article Abstract:

The authors tested abacavir, a reverse transcriptase inhibitor, in combination with mycophenolic acid, a lymphocyte inhibitor used in organ transplants. They found that the two together completely stopped HIV-1 replication, more so than any other antiretroviral combinations yet tested.

Synergistic inhibition of HIV-1 in activated and resting peripheral blood mononuclear cells, monocyte-derived macrophages, and selected drug-resistant isolates with nucleoside analogues combined with a natural product, resveratrol

Article Abstract:

A compound called resveratrol appears to enhance the activity of AIDS drugs, allowing lower dosages to be used. It also appears to have anti-HIV activity. It is found in grapes, wine, and other plants.
