Effects of nandrolone decanoate therapy in borderline hypogonadal men with HIV-associated weight loss

Article Abstract:

Nandrolone decanoate therapy appears to arrest the loss of lean muscle tissue in AIDS wasting syndrome (AWS) in patients with low testosterone levels. AWS is the loss of muscle mass in AIDS patients, which can substantially reduce the quality of life. Researchers treated 18 men with borderline low serum testosterone levels with nandrolone, a testosterone-like drug, or placebo. Patients given the active drug gained lean mass and retained more nitrogen, while placebo-treated patients continued to lose mass and nitrogen. Benefits of the drug were similar to those obtained with recombinant growth hormone treatment.

Determination of the inhibitory effect on Toxoplasma growth in the serum of AIDS patients during acute therapy for toxoplasmic encephalitis

Article Abstract:

The combination of sulfadiazine with pyrimethamine seems to be particularly effective against Toxoplasma gondii in AIDS patients with toxoplasmic encephalitis. Researchers treated 26 AIDS patients with the parasitic infection with both drugs, and found that blood serum from treated patients substantially inhibited growth of the parasite after one day of drug therapy. During 15 days of treatment, serum from patients inhibited 67-93% of Toxoplasma growth. Pyrimethamine was inhibitory at low doses, and its effect was potentiated with the addition of sulfadiazine to therapy.
