Elderly abuse: issues for nurses

Article Abstract:

Nursing staff need to be aware of the symptoms of elderly abuse, which may affect up to 5% of the UK population over the age of 65 in 1998. Verbal abuse is the most common form of abuse towards the elderly, followed by general neglect and financial extortion. Specific skills are required when medical staff deal with the elderly, who may be difficult and argumentative. Management techniques are essential for medical staff when learning how to deal with their own aggression and those of patients.

Undervalued, unashamed

Article Abstract:

Nurses wishing to enter the field of caring for older people often find others in the nursing profession are prejudiced and deeply uncaring about the needs of the elderly and the skills needed to nurse them. The whole elderly nursing field is regarded with disdain by some nurses who believe caring for the elderly involves a constant round of clearing up bodily waste and wiping faces. The nursing profession should encourage those who wish to enter such a rewarding and valuable field of care.
